At its center is a large piece of garden quartz. The inclusions within the stone reminded me of a fragment of the sea captured inside, so I chose it as the heart of the jellyfish. Drawing inspiration from a variety of real jellyfish, I combined a softly rounded, cylindrical shape with four slender tentacles. The result is a charming pink jellyfish inspired by the wonderful diversity of these sea creatures. The tsumami-zaiku base is made with fabric featuring a vivid pink botanical pattern. Even the parts hidden from view are covered in patterned fabric, allowing flashes of color to peek through the gaps in the silk. [Features] This netsuke was born from the idea of letting a jellyfish swim across an obi, taking shape through repeated experiments. Three to five colors of sheer silk are layered around the jellyfish to capture its translucent appearance. At its center is a natural stone whose inclusions resemble a small scene taken from the sea. Slender chains and cords form the tentacles. The two materials sway gently together with every turn of the netsuke as you move. The design is based on the image of a moon jellyfish, though real moon jellyfish do not have tentacles this long. As I developed the piece, I drew inspiration from the tentacles of other species, including the red jellyfish and the Portuguese man o’ war, imagining their forms drifting through the sea.
